They can be identified easily in the landscape by their rounded canopies that are covered in palm-shaped bright green leaves that change to yellow (orange-red sometimes) in autumn. Fragrant, tower-like chartreuse flowers appear mid-spring and eventually lead to the glossy brown fruit that most are familiar with. Ohio buckeyes do best in moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Trees benefit from a thick layer of mulch as leaves can scorch during summer months in dry conditions. They can also be sensitive to transplanting due to their taproot system. It is an enduring and beautiful, small or medium sized deciduous shad tree that provides interest through the seasons. Early Glow buckeye produces showy yellow-green flowers in the spring that rise on spikes above the foliage. This improved variety does not produce many, if any, buckeye fruits. Combined with its adaptability to different environmental conditions and soils, this makes it a great candidate for use as a street tree. The unusual coarse foliage and blooms provide interest and dense shade. If planted as a street tree, the crown should be raised when the lower branches are still small to avoid damaging the tree. It shows excellent resistance to leaf scorch and leaf blotch; and has radiant orange and red fall color. It should be noted that all parts of this tree are poisonous, so it should not be planted where livestock or animals can graze on it.

**Photos courtesy of Kuenzi Turf & Nursery**

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9929/files/buckeyeearlyglowflower_kuenziturfnursery.jpg?v=1780694126
buckeye-mystic-ruby
Buckeye, Mystic Ruby

Aesculus x bushii 'Aaron #1' Mystic Ruby)

Height: 25-30ft
Spread: 15-20ft
Zone: 4-7
Exposure: Part sun to part or dappled shade
Growth Rate: Moderate
Bloom Time/Color: April-May; pink/red
Fall Color: N/A
Uses: Specimen, rain gardens, parks
Maintenance: Low
Tree Shape: Oval
Other: Edible fruits, deer resistant

Ohio buckeyes can be identified easily by their palm-shaped bright green leaves that change to yellow (orange-red sometimes) in autumn.
