Tiny, red or green flowers (depending on the tree) appear on the branches in early spring before leaves emerge. Once flowers begin to fade, ruffled, heart shaped leaves begin to appear and start out reddish-purple before maturing to a nice medium green. In autumn, leaves turn into a beautiful display of yellow, orange, and coral colors and sometimes (if conditions are right) the fallen leaves seem to have a scent of cinnamon, cotton candy, or even caramel. Katsura trees do best in moist, well drained soils in part shade and have some tolerance to clay soils. They are also prized for lack of issues with diseases or insects.
