Almost every Midwest gardener knows that summers would not be complete without one or more varieties of coneflower. They're extremely easy to care for: adaptable to most soil types provided it is well-drained, tolerant of drought, poor soils, heat and humidity, and can grow in either full sun or part shade. Coneflowers contain medium green, scabrous, oblong leaves with flowers in a multitude of colors that are arranged into rays of petals with a high cone in the center. Blooms make good cut or dried flowers for vases and are targets for butterflies and other pollinators. Plants are relatively disease, insect, and deer resistant apart from aster yellows disease. 'Doublescoop Watermelon Deluxe' is a very sturdy, medium sized coneflower that has beautiful hot pink blooms with an eye that appears almost black when first opening.
