Large heart shaped leaves cover the tree throughout the growing season and eventually turn yellow\/brown before falling off. The most unique feature of catalpas however are the large, fragrant, white bell-shaped flowers (with purple\/yellow speckling) that appear in late spring and completely cover the tree making it a site to see from a distance. Once the flowers fade, large, slender green seed pods appear (once every two to three years) and persist into fall. Ridged gray-brown bark adds interest to the landscape as well. Northern catalpa prefer moist\/wet conditions in full sun to part shade, however are quite tolerant of poor soils, flooding, clay soils, and drought.
