Japanese painted ferns are one of the best plants for shade in part due to their textural form, coloring, and ease of care. They are characterized by fronds of small leaflets in greens, purples, and greys (more green in extreme heat). Excellent when mixed amongst hostas, coral bells, and other green shade perennials. Japanese painted ferns prefer rich, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade in a consistently moist environment. They are disease/insect resistant and rabbits tend to avoid them in search for tastier plants. 'Godzilla' was chosen for its extremely large fronds.
