Plants form rounded mounds of arching, bright green, hair-like blades that changes to a golden orange in fall. Seed heads rise above in summer in panicles of pinky-brown heads that have a slight fragrance of coriander. Prairie dropseed is insect and disease resistant and is often overlooked by deer. It grows best in drier soils in full sun, but tolerates a wide array of conditions. It is slow to establish however.

Sporobolus heterolepis is an Iowa native.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9929/files/Sporobolus_heterolepis_0000_high_res__32363.1564670967.386.513.jpg?v=1775334259
