Eastern red cedar is a very common tree found in Iowa and is appreciated for its use as a source of aromatic wood. Often the foliage is blue-green, aromatic, and arranged in scale-like leaves along the branches. Juniper berries may be present throughout the growing season. Junipers do best in average, well-drained soils in full sun. They are intolerant of wet conditions. 'Taylor' is a beautiful cultivar of red cedar with silvery-blue green foliage which can get bronze tones in autumn. Its narrow, columnar habit makes it an excellent choice for vertical accents or screens.
Juniperus virginiana is an Iowa native.
