Gambel oak is a native of the Rocky Mountains where it enjoys average, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade (though it can tolerate a wide range of sites). Medium-green leaves with rounded lobes cover the canopy during the growing season before turning reddish-brown in autumn. Acorns mature in autumn as well and are great food for wildlife, however, they do not start producing until the tree is older. Gambel oak is also a great naturalizer and can form clumps in desirable conditions. Drought tolerant.
