This species is an excellent choice as a shade or street tree due to its ability to withstand periods of drought, wet soils, clay, differences in soil pH, and poor soils. Shingle oak's canopy is covered in oblong, narrow leaves without lobes and are a nice, glossy medium green. Foliage in autumn turns varying shades of brown, yellow, russet, and copper and leaves often will persist on the tree through winter, adding interest and texture against the snow. Acorns mature over a two year period before becoming fodder for wildlife.
