Barberries are one of the most seen shrubs in Midwestern landscapes and are planted for their adaptability and dependability. Plants are recognized by their tiny, oval leaves that come in colors varying between red, purple, or chartreuse. They have inconspicuous yellow flowers that are often hidden by foliage and mature into tiny orange fruit by autumn. Barberries are covered in minute thorns and care should be taken when pruning or where planted in areas with pets/small children. They can be aggressive in northern climates.
‘Concorde’ was selected for its dramatic, deep-purple leaves that emerge in spring and hold their color throughout the summer and finally brighten to a brilliant red in fall. One of the darkest purples, this rounded barberry is easily maintained and makes an excellent low hedge or foundation planting in full sun.
