Clematis are often called the "queen of the vines" because of their extremely showy summer flowers. 'Jackmanii' is a popular cultivar that is sought after for its large (5-7") four to six petaled purple flowers that bloom throughout mid-late summer. Dark green leaves cover the vines throughout the growing season and once flowers fade, they get very ornamental seed heads. Clematis grow best in fertile, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Their growth will also benefit from a thick layer of mulch. 'Jackmanii' blooms on old and new wood (clematis groups 2 and 3) and can be pruned lightly or to the ground in fall/spring without a lot of sacrifice to the amount of future blooms. 'Jackmanii' has been in production since the mid 1800's.
